New issue of IoH Magazine available to members today! | Institute of Hospitality

We are delighted to share that the new issue of IoH Magazine is available for members to read online today.

In this issue, the emphasis is strongly on sustainability and we have looked at it from every angle. General manager of The Hari Andrew Coney FIH tells us that luxury and sustainability are not mutually exclusive and general manager of the Atheneum Hotel & Residences Joanne Taylor-Stagg FIH advises on how to encourage guests to be sustainable without being bossy.

Our EDI lead Dorothea Jones MIH warns businesses against making shallow promises and says we have to take serious action now to save the planet, and Katherine Price looks at the way the Swiss are tackling climate change, which poses a threat to the country’s tourism industry.

There are some worthwhile services our members could turn to in their efforts to be sustainable, says editor Catherine Chetwynd MIH, and also talks to Philip Halanen, whose role at Wyndham Hotels and Resorts covers both procurement and sustainability. In addition, the article also documents the strong sustainability elements of the huge upgrade project at London’s Shaftesbury Theatre.

And Exclusive Hotels has achieved a B Corp accreditation, which is no easy task. Danny Pecorelli FIH MI tells what he and team Exclusive had to do for that and explains what they are doing to make continuous improvement for the group’s next accreditation in September 2024.

Outside matters green, sales and revenue manager of Balmer Lawn Hotel & Spa Pauline Clitheroe asks why many women’s career path declines steeply at the age of 33, and Graeme Reid, LGBT rights director at Human Rights Watch, points out that there are still many countries that legislate against same-sex conduct and persecute LGBT people, as is evidenced by the extreme anti-LGBT law passed by the Ugandan parliament in May.

We celebrate the launch of IoH North and chair Matt Townley FIH reveals how the region is going to make its mark over the coming year. CEO of the IoH Robert Richardson FIH MI writes about the pros and cons of hybrid working and explains the action he took to mitigate the downsides, and Peter Avis FIH, CEO of Galvin’s Chance, reveals the charity’s work with disadvantaged and displaced young people.

And now that we have an employees’ market, the competition for jobs is fierce, so it is essential to work on your personal brand to ensure you shine out from the crowd, says chair of the Youth Council Katariina Reissaar MIH.

We hope you enjoy the lively mixture of articles in this issue and as ever, we welcome your feedback.
