Being part of your industry’s professional body is recognition of your qualifications, work experience and career achievements. New members join at Affiliate level before being professionally graded. Once graded our members are assigned post-nominals AIH, MIH and FIH after their name, where applicable.

Our Membership Grades at a Glance

Affiliate

£145

  • Automatically assigned when you join the Institute before you are expertly assed and graded
  • Students, newcomers to the industry, or suppliers are designated at this grade. You do not qualify to use designated letters after your name, vote or hold office at the Institute
  • As an Affiliate you can request a free grading assessment within 12 months of joining. After 12 months, a £50 regrading fee applies.

Associate (AIH)

£145

  • After you’ve joined us, you will be expertly assessed and graded
  • Grading at Associate-level membership is for entry-level managers working in a hospitality, leisure or tourism role
  • Typically suitable for recent graduates or those who hold another qualification and have some additional management experience in the industry
  • Associates can use the post-nominal letters ‘AIH’

Member MIH

£200

  • After you’ve joined us, you will be expertly assessed and graded
  • Grading at Member-level demonstrates appropriate qualifications and training, plus experience in a management or senior management post, directly concerned with the hospitality or related industries
  • Members can use the post-nominal letters ‘MIH’.

Fellowship FIH*

£300

+ Upgrade Fee

Our most senior level of membership recognises the importance and expertise of the most senior members of the hospitality, leisure and tourism industries

  • To be considered, you must have been at MIH-level for 5+ years and show exceptional leadership
  • Must be supported by two Fellows (known for 3+ years) or three senior industry referees
  • New Fellows must mentor at least one student or new entrant in their first year
  • Approved members can use the post-nominal letters ‘FIH’ and will enter the prestigious College of Fellows.

How to Upgrade Your Membership

Demonstrate your Professional Progression

If you have gained additional experience in the industry or additional qualifications, you may be eligible to apply for a membership upgrade.

What you need to do

  • Complete the form
  • Send us your CV and qualification certificates
  • Our Membership team will contact you if we need anything else and let you know the outcome of your regrade assessment.

* Referees must not be members of the applicant’s immediate family circle. The Supervisory Board may, at its discretion, accept three references from those who are not Fellows of the Institute, provided they hold senior management positions in the industry and have known the applicant for at least three years immediately preceding the application.
