The winners of the 25th annual Institute of Hospitality Awards for Professionalism (NI Branch) have been announced online through Facebook and Twitter for the first time in the history of the awards.
Winners included Hotelier of the Year, Jason Foody of Killeavy Castle Estate in Co Armagh, Chef of the Year (restaurant), Daniel Harvey of Havana Bank Square and the Hospitality Management Team of the Year was awarded to the La Mon Hotel and Country Club.
Chair of the Institute of Hospitality Northern Ireland, Marianne Hood FIH, says the sector was keen to progress the awards despite the severe limitations imposed by the pandemic.
“This is the hospitality sector’s most prestigious event in which recognition of the excellence of the people in the business across all disciplines is a valued, career-enhancing feature,” says Ms Hood. “While we are sorry to be marking our 25th anniversary in such extraordinary circumstances, it does not take away from the importance and significance of the event for all those who participate including contender, judges and sponsors.”
A lunch event to which the winners, and sponsors will be invited is due to be held in the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Belfast. “This event does not replace the annual gala dinner at which the winners are usually revealed,” says Ms Hood. “It is intended as a recognition event and will be extremely limited numbers for social distancing purposes.”
The Institute of Hospitality annual awards are now acknowledged as the most significant and meaningful in the sector in Northern Ireland.
“This year when our industry is more exposed and vulnerable than at any time in living memory, it is important we take stock of the appalling and ever-changing situation we are in, and the heroic efforts that all our people, learning and working across the industry, have been making to keep our businesses afloat,” says Ms Hood.
“As an Institute we are using all our influence and connections to remind the Northern Ireland government of the critical nature of the sector in terms of employment and also as a key economic driver shaping the future of the country as a successful tourism destination.”
