We spotted this succint but informative document called Employment Law for Start-ups and knew that IoHBlog followers who are running – or starting – a small or medium size enterprise (SME) would appreciate its quick overview of the key issues affecting UK businesses.
Made freely available to the public by the Institute of Directors (IoD), the briefing states that there are four main areas where employment issues may crop up for small and start-up companies. Understanding and complying with the rules and regulations surrounding the four areas can be a fairly straightforward business. The briefing highlights the four areas in as many pages, making it worth a look for even the busiest of managers. The areas are:

- Employment contracts
- Discrimination
- Sickness
- Dismissals
Business owners and operators who have a grasp of these four areas can, for the most part, “avoid most of the pitfalls and prevent problems arising” according to the IoD.
Institute members have exclusive access to the BusinessHR website and Helpline where they can obtain over 70 customisable, legally compliant templates for use in their own businesses. It’s like having an HR department on your PC!
