A new book by Monica Or FIH showcases our industry in a positive light and shares numerous stories and video interviews with people at all stages of their professional journeys, making it an excellent resource for careers advisors and educators.

 As the founder of the Star Quality Hospitality Consultancy, Or works with the owner/managers of independent hotels and restaurants, focusing on their business structure and service delivery. She is a former chair of the Institute of Hospitality London Branch.

Commenting on her latest publication, Or says: “With the prospect of Brexit and the ever-growing skills shortage that the hospitality industry is facing, I thought it was high time that the hospitality industry was promoted in a much more positive light. Showcasing the careers of hospitality professionals within our industry, from across the various sectors, this book shares stories, video interviews and advice on how to get involved and have a rewarding hospitality career.”

The book is divided into three sections. The first section looks at the inspiring career stories of people who work in the industry, which gives an idea of its scope and scale. At the end of each career story there is a link to the full video interview.

The second section gives top tips and advice on how to get a job in our industry, using the acronym HOSPITALITY. It reveals some of the tools that recruiters use, but don’t tell you about. The focus is very much on the soft skills, attitude, behaviour and social interaction that are expected of people working in this industry.

The third section looks at the training, support and guidance available throughout your hospitality career. Again, there are video links to interviews that were carried out with these organisations and these go into more detail about how they can help.
