The Master Innholders has opened applications for the annual GM of the Future, the Neil Bannister Scholarship, offering one ambitious UK hotel professional the opportunity to undertake a fully funded 12-month leadership development programme at Cranfield University, valued at over £15,000.
The successful candidate will undertake Cranfield University’s prestigious Talent Development Programme, a year-long programme focused on professional development, leadership development and personal growth. The programme is designed to help participants develop skills including strategic thinking, commercial awareness, decision-making, communication and leading others, while building greater confidence and self-awareness as leaders.
Designed specifically for busy hotel professionals, the programme can be completed while continuing to work in their current role, allowing participants to apply their learning directly in their workplace.
A prize is also available to the runner-up, who will receive a place on Cranfield University’s Impact and Influence programme, alongside six 90-minute executive coaching sessions.
The award is designed for ambitious hospitality professionals who are already demonstrating leadership potential and are looking to take the next step in their careers. Applicants may be working towards their first General Manager role or be in the early stages of their leadership journey, typically as a middle or senior manager.
The award was renamed the Neil Bannister Scholarship in 2025 in honour of the late Neil Bannister MI, a respected hotelier and Master Innholder who was a longtime advocate for supporting and developing emerging talent in the hotel industry.
To apply, candidates must complete an application form exploring their leadership and development, achievements and contributions to their teams and the wider hotel industry. Applications must also include an endorsement from their line manager.
A shortlist will be selected by a judging panel of Master Innholders and other industry figures. Shortlisted candidates will receive a complimentary ticket to the 2027 Hotel Leadership Conference, taking place on 11–12 January at JW Marriott Grosvenor House London, including the black-tie dinner on the first evening, where the winner and runner-up will be announced.
The deadline for applications is 30 September 2026.
