Following Hospitality Action’s 2026 Taking the Temperature survey, the charity has released its latest findings on mental health and wellbeing across the hospitality sector.
Conducted this summer in association with Agilysys, the survey reveals the growing pressure on hospitality managers, who are increasingly expected to support the wellbeing of their teams while facing significant pressures of their own.
Almost two-thirds (65%) of hospitality managers who have experienced a mental health issue in their adult life say it was triggered by their work. Meanwhile, 61% of managers said they had been asked to support a colleague experiencing a mental health challenge in the past year, compared with 40% of hospitality professionals overall.
The findings also highlight the need for greater support and training, with almost half of respondents (47%) wanting more management training to help leaders recognise and respond to mental health and wellbeing concerns.
Despite the challenges, the survey points to encouraging progress across the sector. Around two-thirds of respondents say they have a good work-life balance and believe their workplace has created an environment where they can openly discuss mental health, while over half (54%) feel their wellbeing is supported by their organisation.
The Institute would encourage members to review the findings and consider how managers and teams can be better supported to create mentally healthy workplaces across the hospitality sector.
