Episode 13 | I’m In Podcast: Mindset V Experience Part Two

29 September 2022

Episode 13 of our official IoH I’m In Podcast is available to members today!

Something a little different for you this month as we go back over old ground and reopen our discussion around mindset v experience to three more amazing humans from within the IoH membership.

For this episode, Phil Street FIH was joined by Christopher White AIH, Simon Coulson MIH and Peter Hancock FIH. As always, our guests gave us some brilliant reasons to say #imin to the IoH including: –

  • To be seen as a player in the industry
  • To have letters after your name adds to credibility and is a mark of professionalism
  • Giving and receiving of help throughout the industry
  • Networking
  • Sharing of information
  • To connect to networks around the world

In discussing whether having a mature mindset can achieve the same results as experience, Phil and his guests got through a lot including: –

  • Maturity is nothing to do with age
  • Being attitude centric plays into the hands of what makes you successful in hospitality
  • Getting your behaviours into a mature and constant place can really help you in leadership
  • Maturity & experience can go hand in hand, one can inform the other
  • Circumstance can dictate your response, sometimes it’s a “I have no choice” approach
  • There will always be times where you have no experience in a particular area so your mindset informs your response here
  • There’s an argument that amid the staffing issues we experience, we should be recruiting for attitude and worry about the experience later
  • Too much experience can get in the way of change
  • If you don’t have the answers, that’s OK – having a mature mindset to that will help you progress
  • Trust is so important in order to give the individual the opportunity to have the right mindset towards situations that arise
  • Put yourself in unknown situations (which is inevitable anyway) and you’ll be more ready for the future when the unknown hits you

A huge thank you to our guests for giving up their time and opinion.

Enjoy!
