The award, conferred by the University’s Board of Governors and Academic Board, recognises Robert’s outstanding contribution to the global hospitality profession, his leadership of the Institute of Hospitality, and his commitment to advancing professional standards, education and inclusion across the sector.
Honorary doctorates are awarded by universities to individuals who have made a significant impact within their field or contributed meaningfully to society, recognising achievement beyond traditional academic routes.
Under Robert’s leadership, the Institute of Hospitality has strengthened its position as the global professional body for hospitality, championing lifelong learning, professional recognition, and career development for thousands of members worldwide. His work has focused on raising standards, fostering collaboration across industry and education, and advocating for hospitality as a respected and vital profession.
The honorary doctorate will be formally conferred during the University of Wolverhampton’s summer graduation ceremonies, taking place between 28 July and 31 July 2026.
Commenting on the announcement, Robert said: “I am deeply honoured to receive this recognition from the University of Wolverhampton. Hospitality is a profession built on people, purpose and pride, and I have been fortunate to work alongside exceptional colleagues across our global hospitality community. This award reflects not only my own journey, but the collective efforts of the Institute of Hospitality and the wider industry in driving professionalism and opportunity.”

Robert began his career on the hotel floor and progressed through operational leadership roles to become Chief Executive of the Institute of Hospitality. A professionally qualified chef and Visiting Professor at Ulster University, he is a strong advocate for accessible career pathways and the development of future talent within the sector.
