The Institute of Hospitality has awarded accreditation for five years to the Universiti Malaysia Kelantan (UMK) for their Bachelor of Entrepreneurship degree programmes with Honours, in Hospitality, Tourism, and Wellness (spa management).
These vocationally-focused programmes offered in either a traditional or an industry mode, are designed to produce graduates who are ‘competent in the workplace’, have developed their entrepreneurial skills, and who are creative, innovative and ethical. The programmes are offered on a full-time basis over four years and are delivered by the Faculty of Hospitality, Tourism and Wellness, which was established in 2016. The Bachelor of Entrepreneurship (Wellness) with Honours is considered to be the first of its kind in Malaysia.
The Professional Review Panel commended the programmes and, in particular:
- The options of the traditional mode of study or an alternative industry mode
- The range of additional awards available for hospitality students
- The focus on the relevant industry and experiential learning through the placement
- The very high educational and professional body qualifications of the staff
- The research and publications profile of the staff
- The staff memberships of industry-related committees and organisations
- The multitude of opportunities for students to provide feedback both formally and informally
- The consistent, healthy recruitment to the three programmes over a six year period.
Associate Professor Dr Mohd Fadil Mohd Yusof, Dean of the Faculty of Hospitality, Tourism and Wellness said: “We are very proud to receive accreditation from the Institute of Hospitality for the academic programmes offered. This is indeed a remarkable accomplishment, especially considering that UMK is a relatively new university, having been established in 2006. Gaining international recognition for our programmes speaks volumes about the dedication, quality, and standards upheld by the faculty and administration at UMK. It is a testament to our commitment to providing excellent education in the field of hospitality, tourism, and wellness.”
IoH CEO Robert Richardson FIH MI added: “Huge congratulations to the Universiti Malaysia Kelantan on receiving IoH accreditation for their undergraduate programmes. We are delighted to welcome the university to our global network of accredited programme providers and our ‘Hospitality Family’. I look forward to developing our relationship with them in the coming years.”
