Hospitality Action’s fundraising Walk for Wellbeing 8-16 October 2022

15 August 2022

Supported again this year by the Institute of Hospitality, Hospitality Action is inviting everyone to put on their walking shoes, have fun and join the Walk for Wellbeing: Anytime Challenge, between October 8 – 16, encompassing World Mental Health Day on October 10 2022.

Four hosted Walk for Wellbeing 20km events will take place in London, Birmingham, Manchester and Glasgow, on Sunday 16 October. But you can also complete the challenge – your way, anywhere, even walking around a car park, your neighbourhood or up a hill! The event is accessible to all ages and abilities, regardless of fitness level and is about having fun while raising money and awareness for Hospitality Action.

Walk for Wellbeing is powered by UK hospitality talent partner, mum, in partnership with Caterer.comDavidson Asset Management (DAM) and The Caterer and is a fun, flexible event all about taking simple steps to promote wellbeing.

Founder and Director of mum, Craig Prentice explains: “This year’s event is the perfect opportunity for people to come together to promote wellbeing and better mental health, whilst supporting the great work of Hospitality Action. We’re asking everyone to join us on a journey towards better emotional and physical wellbeing. The event has been designed with flexibility in mind, to ensure people can take part wherever they are in the UK, either as an individual, with family, friends or with work colleagues. So let’s walk the walk and make a difference together.”

Since the onset of the pandemic Hospitality Action has taken strides to support as many hospitality people as possible. Since the start of 2020, Hospitality Action has spent more than £2.3m supporting over 7,000 hospitality households in crisis. Many of those, face life-threatening illness, homelessness, domestic abuse or addiction, often accompanied by crippling mental health.

Robert Richardson FIH, the IoH CEO, speaking about the event said: “We are delighted to be involved with Hospitality Action and mum again this year to help raise funds for their incredible work. Mental health is fast becoming an overwhelming issue for employers and the NHS and can affect anyone. I know our members and our wider hospitality family will rise to the challenge, sign-up and raise money through the Walk for Wellbeing between the 8-16 August 2022. Every penny counts so please get involved if you can.”

Mark Lewis, Chief Executive, Hospitality Action says “Walk for Wellbeing not only helps employers foster a positive culture around workplace mental health, but it will also raise vital funds at a critical time for the hospitality industry. Demand for Hospitality Action’s support is at an all-time high and we estimate that a third of all the requests for financial assistance we currently receive are from people suffering from, or at risk of, poor mental health. We expect the situation to worsen as the cost-of-living crisis bites in the autumn and are grateful to all those taking part in Walk for Wellbeing.”

The funds raised across all sponsored walks support people just like Mr A and Mrs B below:

“I just wanted to say how grateful I am for the grant. I honestly cannot express how much it means. This will have such a massive impact on day-to-day life and the peace of mind it has given is priceless.” Mr A

“We genuinely can’t put into words how much this has helped us. We never thought we would ever be in a position in our life to have to reach out and ask for support, but we are at rock bottom in our life right now and the support that you have shown us will never be forgotten.” Mrs B
