IoH develop five management pillars as foundation for professional learning | Institute of Hospitality

The IoH has developed a new approach to its CPD professional learning and development based on the five core areas of hospitality management.

To be known as the IoH Five Pillars of Learning, they bring together all the IoH’s learning materials and courses under five key management disciplines. Allowing IoH members to effectively select relevant learning tools from the management areas where they need to expand or polish their skills.

Sam Coulstock FIH, IoH Head of Professional Development confirmed: “We have mapped all our existing learning resources to our new IoH five-pillar model and this now forms the foundation of the CPD outputs that support our members’ knowledge, skills, and behaviours.”

What are the IoH Five Pillars of Learning?

The five pillars focus on the core elements of hospitality business management. They are:

1. Business

Includes: Finance, human resources, sales and marketing, operating models, vision and mission, business strategy, competitors, analysis of management information, contingency planning, the technology supporting the delivery of products, environmental, and legislative and social responsibilities.

2. Customer / Guest

Includes: Determining the customer service journey, impact of service failure on hospitality, customer feedback as a competitive tool, implementing and evaluating hospitality marketing and sales strategies, understanding what it means to champion the business and maintain comprehensive product / service, brand and market knowledge.

3. Leadership

Includes: Management and leadership styles, diversity and inclusion, a culture that demonstrates social inclusion, and an understanding of how to lead the implementation of change.

4. Self-Care

Includes: Mental health, physical health, and personal effectiveness, managing self, emotional intelligence, work and business culture and conscious leadership.

5. Team

Includes: Creating a people strategy, communicating and engaging with people and teams, management of team recruitment, learning and development, and retention
