As part of Scottish Apprenticeship Week, Charlotte tells us about her experience working at The Torridon as an Apprentice and her aspirations for her hospitality career.
My Apprenticeship programme is run by Apprenticeship in Hospitality Scotland (AHS). AHS is a ground-breaking training course that began as a partnership between hotels across Scotland. The apprentices follow the Modern Apprenticeship in Hospitality Services framework and spend six months in key departments; housekeeping, food and beverage, kitchen and reception over two years. The programmes are for young people up to 24 years old and provide the opportunity to gain valuable work-based learning and industry-recognised qualifications while employed.
I am four months into my 2-year AHS Apprenticeship working at The Torridon. I’m currently in my first department, Housekeeping and so far, I’m really enjoying it and expanding my skills.
Experience plus qualifications
Some of the best parts of my Apprenticeship has been gaining experience and figuring out my next steps while I gain qualifications along the way. But mostly the best part is the people at The Torridon. I have live-in accommodation so I spend a lot of my time with my work colleagues. As everyone else is in the same situation, we all get on so well. They were so welcoming from day one so I didn’t feel apprehensive when I first started.
For anyone thinking about starting an Apprenticeship in Scotland, I would say just go for it. You don’t need qualifications to get an Apprenticeship, it’s all about the experience and being keen. Be talkative, don’t be afraid to ask questions if you’re not sure. There’s no such thing as a silly question and always use your initiative. This is new to me. From my perspective, I’m learning loads and loving it.
Future ambitions
I really want to work in more luxury 5-star hotels like The Torridon and progress into management. But my ultimate goal is to work on superyachts. It’s a massive goal but I’m more than certain I’ll get there.
