The tool was developed a few years ago and has been updated and reissued in this 3rd edition for 2015.

The aim of the tool is to help wine owners track and manage the status of bottles being cellared. This means “keeping track of a wine’s drinkability window,” says the application’s creator, Gary M. Thompson, a professor at the Cornell University School of Hotel Administration. Thompson states that “if the cellar owner methodically enters the necessary information, the tool provides him or her with the information needed to promote, open, or continue to store wines in a collection.” The application also includes what Thompson calls additional “cellar analytics” which can guide users in what to consume and when.

A tool like Thompson’s can help wine owners and cellar managers better understand the consumption of their wines as well as when to promote particular wines. We imagine this tool can assist managers in marketing and buying decisions and perhaps even understanding consumer trends or customer preferences.
