The International Association de la Sommellerie Internationale (ASI) Sommelier diploma certification exam is being held in the UK on Monday 2 March 2020 in London.

What is the opportunity for UK based sommeliers?

A unique opportunity to be recognised worldwide as having a high level of knowledge and skills. Those who pass the exam in 2020 will become part of an elite group of international sommeliers.

ASI certified sommeliers in UK since 2018 include:

  • Eric Zwiebel MS, Summer Lodge Hotel (only platinum level holder of the certification worldwide)
  • Charles Carron-Brown, Henrock Restaurant (Bronze Diploma)
  • Tamas Czinki, Northcote Hotel (Gold Diploma)
  • Gareth Ferreira, Core by Clare Smith (Gold Diploma)
  • Marco Iaccarino, The Berkeley Hotel (Gold Diploma)

This is the second time that this diploma is being run in UK. Last year, out of the eight candidates who participated,  seven candidates successfully passed the diploma.

What specific benefits does certification give to sommeliers?

The exam was established to standardise the level of sommeliers internationally and certification is a valuable asset for a sommelier’s CV, allowing them to work worldwide with proof of their excellence.

On Monday 2 March 2020 at the International Wine and Spirit Centre in London, ASI, in association with WSET, Academy of Food & Wine Service and the Institute of Hospitality, will offer the International ASI Sommelier diploma certification exam to local sommeliers. This is a unique opportunity for UK based sommeliers to gain international accreditation.

Who can enter?

Applicants must be working Sommeliers (in restaurants, wine bars, wine retail, distribution etc), with at least four years’ sommelier experience.

How does the exam work?

The exam is made up of two stages – a written exam and oral and practical tests – and is completed in one day between 8.00am and 5.00pm.

What are the costs?

£315 – which covers ASI registration and certification.

Candidates are also responsible for their own travel and associated costs to attend the exam in London on Monday 2 March 2020.

What important dates should I remember?

Registration must be submitted by 5pm, Saturday 15 February 2020 for applicants to be considered.

The examination fee must be paid in full by 5pm, Wednesday 19 February 2020.
