The Institute of Hospitality Southern Branch hosted their Student of the Year Awards Gala Evening at the AA 4 Star Balmer Lawn Hotel, Brockenhurst on 16 May 2019.

The evening was opened by Andrew Stembridge FIH, Executive Director of Iconic Hotels, who discussed the amazing opportunities for hospitality in the coming years. Andrew said ‘ I am proud to be a part of such a talented and skilled industry that offers opportunity to all’.

The evening began with a relaxed champagne reception on the sunny terrace of the hotel followed by a three course meal prepared by the ‘Balmer Lawn Hotel’ Executive Chef Chris Wheeldon.  Michael Clitheroe, General Manager of the Balmer Lawn Hotel said ‘without a doubt these awards are a shining star in our calendar of events, we are delighted to be supporting the young talent of hospitality and the Southern Branch again this year.’

There were six awards up for grabs, five student awards and one special award presented by vote of the committee.

By vote of the branch committee the recipient of this award was:
Julian Tomlin FIH MI

‘We have had a great response from the colleges, apprenticeship providers and universities within the branch region this year’, explains Richard Ward FIH MBII, Chairman of the IoH Southern Branch, ‘and we are thrilled by the high level of support we have received from our industry partners and suppliers’.

In his acceptance speech Julian Tomlin FIH MI said ‘after seeing the quality of the finalists that preceded me the industry has got a fantastic future’. Graham Chambers from Chewton Glen Hotel said ‘ we are delighted to continue our support of these fantastic awards and recognise the upcoming talent in hospitality’ he went on to say ‘this has been a fantastic night of celebration that I feel very privileged to have been part of’.

Finalists came from Brockenhurst College; Fareham College; Bournemouth & Poole College; Chichester College; Bournemouth University; Farnborough College; Reading College; Havant & South Downs College; City College Southampton; Bartley Lodge Hotel and Eastleigh College. Other regional colleges entered but this year were unsuccessful in reaching the final. Thanks to everyone who participated this year.
