Let’s not get hit for six

Malcolm Wyse MIH, General Manager at The Bedford Swan Hotel shares how they have appointed in-house ‘Covid-Secure Champions’.

Straight off the back of an extremely challenging weekend for myself and my team the new guidelines, although somewhat restricting, do provide a new clarity and level playing field that we have been craving for.

At times we have been left in the ‘fuzzy zone’ torn between meeting guest expectations whilst abiding to guidelines lacking enforcement. We have already been working with our local authority, Bedford Borough Council, who have provided great support throughout.

As the PM announced local authorities will introduce ‘Covid-secure marshals’ to enforce the government’s new rules and they will be supported by environmental safety officers. It is unclear yet whether existing staff at Bedford Borough Council would fulfil the marshal roles, or whether they would be recruiting.

Our responsibility for taking contact details for tracing purposes now becomes law and hospitality businesses that don’t collect contact data for all customers will face fines. Within our own property we have taken the proactive decision to appoint our own in-house ‘Covid-Secure Champions’ to give our team, customers and local authority greater confidence. New SOPs have already been introduced to embrace the new guidelines and to allow our team to continue their usual high standards of service and customer care whilst operating in the midst of the pandemic.
