The Institute of Hospitality marked an important milestone in its ambition to become a Chartered Professional Body at a Parliamentary Reception held on 26 January at the House of Commons, kindly hosted by Peter Bedford MP.The reception brought together members, sponsors, partners, and senior stakeholders to discuss why professional recognition, high standards, and long-term career pathways matter for hospitality and formed part of the Institute’s ongoing engagement with government and industry as it continues its journey towards achieving Chartered Status.
During the evening, Dick Dixon, Deputy Head Support People Ministry of Defence (MoD), spoke and confirmed their strong support and endorsement for the Institute’s Chartered Status application. Clearly reflecting the MoD’s shared commitment to advancing professional excellence, widening opportunity, and supporting a highly skilled hospitality workforce that contributes directly to the UK economy.
Speaking at the event, Robert Richardson FIH MI, the Institute’s CEO confirmed: “Achieving Chartered Status is about recognition, responsibility, and trust. It would strengthen professional standards, set out clear career pathways, and help position hospitality as the respected long term profession it has always been. When a profession is recognised, it is given a voice, and with that comes the responsibility to lead, support people, and raise standards for the benefit of the whole sector.”
Robert added: “As I reflect on how far the Institute has come since 1938, I am excited about what comes next. Chartered Status would be a powerful signal of confidence in hospitality professionals and the vital role they play in our economy, our communities, and our everyday lives. I would like to thank our members, partners, sponsors, and supporters who continue to stand alongside the Institute as we work towards achieving Chartered Status and in helping us shape the future of hospitality as a recognised profession of choice.”
