IoH’s monumental 85-year history is charted

As the Institute of Hospitality celebrates its 85th anniversary this year, an illustrational graphic and timeline that charts its historic milestones have been published on our website today.

From its formation in 1938 as the Institutional Management Association (IMA), the Institute of Hospitality (IoH), as we know it today, has been instrumental in helping to establish and shape the hospitality industry on a global scale.

The historic reference covers such significant events as:

• The IMA’s first nutrition course, organised jointly with the Industrial Catering Association and Industrial Welfare Society in 1944, which marked the start of the Institute’s commitment to education and training
• Launching the Master Innholders Awards in 1977, which led to the Institute becoming a founding stakeholder of the Master Innholders in 1978
• Establishing Hospitality Assured as the leading customer service standard for the industry in 1998
• Right up to marking its Chartered Status application to His Majesty’s Most Honorable Privy Council in 2023 (UK).

As IoH CEO Robert Richardson FIH MI said: “We all have a great deal to be proud of. Reflecting back over the past 85 years, we see only a fraction of what has been achieved. The key milestones are just a glimpse into the amount of work and effort afforded by so many people during that time.”

He continued: “We still have a great deal to accomplish on behalf of the hospitality industry and the professionals that work tirelessly every day to provide exceptional service. And my team and I look forward to supporting both, as we move forward and navigate the exciting road ahead.”
