Episode 22 of our monthly ‘I’m In’ podcast, hosted by Phil Street FIH, is available to members today and discusses the topic of “Tough Love and Leadership”.
Joining Phil this month are Sofia Mayr AIH Revenue Executive with Hilton, Vandana Dass MIH Managing Director of Davenport Solicitors, and Jill Whittaker OBE FIH Managing Director of HIT Training.
Before delving into the panel’s thoughts, advice and considerations, Phil asked them to consider the following quote: “An acquaintance merely enjoys your company, a fair-weather companion flatters when all is well, a true friend has your best interests at heart and the pluck to tell you what you need to hear.” – E.A. Bucchianeri, taken from Brushstrokes of a Gadfly.
With that in mind, Phil asked the panel to share their thoughts and asked questions such as:
- What is “Tough love” in the context of Leadership?
- From your own experience, can you provide examples of leaders who have successfully applied tough love in their leadership style?
- And any examples where it has flat-out not worked?
- How would you define the boundaries between tough love and excessive harshness or punishment in leadership?
- Is it ever ok to shout at someone?
- What are the potential benefits of using tough love as a leadership approach?
- Are there any potential drawbacks or risks associated with implementing tough love in leadership?
- How does tough love impact employee motivation and engagement?
- In what situations do you think tough love might be appropriate in leadership?
- How does tough love align with principles of empathy and emotional intelligence in leadership?
- If tough love is ineffective, where does a leader go next?
- How do cultural and individual differences impact the perception and acceptance of tough love in Leadership?
- Can tough love lead to long-term positive changes and growth within individuals and organisations?
- Can someone learn to deliver a tough love style of leadership or is it part of an individual’s natural personality?
- What are some key considerations leaders should keep in mind when deciding whether to utilise tough love in their leadership approach?
And, as usual, Phil asked all his guests to say why they said I’m in to the IoH?
A huge thank you to our guests for giving up their time and insight on this topic.
Enjoy!
