IoH confirms endorsement for the World Sustainable Hospitality Alliance

17 July 2026

The Institute of Hospitality has confirmed endorsement for the Employability Programme and for 29 online sustainability courses offered by the World Sustainable Hospitality Alliance.

The World Sustainable Hospitality Alliance is a global industry body established in 1992 that represents more than 66,000 hotels and 300 brands. The Alliance develops practical tools, standards-aligned resources, and industry programmes that help hospitality companies advance Net Positive Hospitality and social mobility.

The Employability Programme is an industry-led workforce inclusion and social empowerment programme, designed to equip vulnerable youths and other underrepresented groups with work-readiness, life skills, hospitality English, digital and financial literacy, sustainability awareness, and practical hotel exposure for successful entry into hospitality careers. This is achieved through a structured pathway that combines training, practical exposure, and transition to employment. The programme is delivered in four countries – Egypt, India, Kenya and Sri Lanka and has more than 15 years of operational experience, with over 8,000 graduates worldwide.

The World Academy for Sustainable Hospitality is the Alliance’s global online learning platform, designed to translate sustainability, Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) and responsible hospitality principles into practical, role-relevant skills for hotel teams. The 29 specialist online masterclasses cover topics that include: hotel sustainability, carbon accounting, climate action, compliance, corporate environmental management, governance, reporting, responsible communication, and social sustainability. Designed for operational teams, department heads, managers, corporate functions, and students in hospitality, leisure and tourism, learners benefit from practical, role-relevant sustainability capability, improved understanding of ESG expectations, and a clearer pathway to applying sustainability in daily operations and professional development.

The Institute’s Professional Review Panel commended the programmes, and, in particular:

  • Designing a very comprehensive beginners programme (the Employability Programme) for vulnerable youths and other underrepresented groups.
  • Creating a diverse range of online masterclasses on hotel sustainability and related topics around environmental, social and governance.
  • Canvassing feedback from all stakeholders.

Glenn Mandziuk, President & CEO at the World Sustainable Hospitality Alliance, said: “Receiving endorsement from the Institute of Hospitality is a significant milestone for the World Sustainable Hospitality Alliance and the World Academy for Sustainable Hospitality. Recognition from a respected hospitality institution strengthens the quality, relevance, and credibility of our learning programmes and demonstrates their alignment with globally recognised professional standards.

For hospitality employers, this endorsement provides confidence that the skills and competencies developed through our courses reflect the industry’s evolving needs and support workforce resilience, leadership, and operational excellence. For learners around the world – including those participating in our Employability Programme and the World Academy – it adds meaningful professional recognition to their learning journey, strengthening employability, career progression, and lifelong development.

As our industry works towards a more resilient and Net Positive future, investing in people is as important as investing in technology or infrastructure. This endorsement reflects our shared commitment to developing the next generation of hospitality professionals with the knowledge, skills, and leadership required to create lasting positive impact for our businesses, communities, and the planet.”

The Institute’s CEO, Robert Richardson FIH MI added: “We are delighted to award endorsement to the World Sustainable Hospitality Alliance for its Employability Programme and sustainability masterclasses. These programmes are helping to develop future talent, widen access to hospitality careers, and equip professionals with the knowledge needed to support a more sustainable future for our industry. Congratulations to everyone involved.”
