Dr Maria Gebbels MIH receives the CHME Best Paper Award 2025 sponsored by the IoH

27 June 2025

The 33rd Council for Hospitality Management Education (CHME) Annual Research Conference hosted by Edge Hotel School, University of Essex, took place on 20-23 May 2025.

The conference theme was ‘Transforming the hospitality sector through innovation’, and the winning paper was entitled: Starting them young: facilitating early engagement in healthy eating and hospitality careers and was written by Dr Maria Gebbels MIH, Associate Professor in Hospitality, School of Management & Marketing, Greenwich Business School, University of Greenwich. The award was proudly sponsored by the IoH.

The research paper examines how hands-on experiences and an early engagement with healthy eating influence children’s and parents’ perceptions of hospitality careers. Conducted in collaboration with a primary school and a hospitality business, the project engaged Year 4 children in activities promoting healthy eating and raising awareness of a career as a chef, including a 5-star hotel visit. Data was collected via an online questionnaire administered to 60 year 4 children, and two focus groups with 10 children and 7 parents/ guardians. Preliminary findings reveal that children with greater involvement in kitchen activities exhibit healthier eating habits and can develop positive attitudes toward hospitality careers. Hands-on experiences and exposure to hospitality environments can spark curiosity and interest among both children and their parents/ guardians.
