Academic Partner News | DfE select HIT Training to revolutionise apprenticeship requirements

Leading apprenticeship provider and IoH Academic Partner, HIT Training Ltd and its training divisions HIT Training, Connect2Care and EDN, has been selected by the Department for Education to revolutionise apprenticeship requirements with an innovative SEND exemption pilot. For the first time, individuals who may have faced challenges in the education system or experienced learning difficulties will have the opportunity to complete an apprenticeship with an exemption from having to pass Level 1 or Level 2 Functional Skills.

As the current system stands, only apprentices with a pre-existing Education Health and Care Plan (EHCP) or Statement of Learning Difficulties Assessment (LDA) are eligible for exemption from having to pass Level 1 or Level 2 Functional Skills. These apprentices are able to work towards and pass the lower level of Functional Skills in English and Maths at Entry Level 3.

The pilot will enable HIT’s Special Educational Needs and/or Disabilities Coordinator (SENDCO) to conduct additional assessments and to judge whether an apprentice would have the equivalent need for an EHCP or LDA and then approve this exemption.

With an estimated 2.16% of adults in the UK believed to have a learning disability, HIT hopes taking part in this innovative SEND exemption pilot will revolutionise apprenticeship requirements and smash traditional barriers that have hindered employees from accessing apprenticeships.

No longer will low English and maths levels or the absence of a formal ECHP or LDA statement stand in the way of anyone wishing to embark on a rewarding apprenticeship journey.

The pilot is running from May 2023 to April 2024 and is open to any apprentices, including those already in the workplace, with training provided by HIT Training, Connect2Care or EDN.
