Margaret Clarke MIH: Obituary

We were deeply saddened to hear that Margaret Clarke MIH, a committed volunteer with the Institute of Hospitality Scotland region and a respected member of Scotland’s hospitality profession, has passed away.

Margaret served as secretary to the IoH Scotland committee, a role she carried out with dedication, professionalism, and huge reserves of enthusiasm, especially when a golf day was being organised! She played a vital part in the governance and smooth running of the Institute’s work in Scotland, supporting regional Chairs, committees, and members through periods of growth and change. Her contribution helped ensure continuity, good practice, and strong engagement across the Scottish Region.

Margaret’s commitment and energy to professional standards and lifelong learning within the IoH family were legendary. She was particularly valued for her organisational ability, reliability, and willingness to give her time generously for the benefit of others. While never seeking the spotlight, she was a constant and reassuring presence behind the scenes, ensuring meetings, events, and formal processes were conducted with care and integrity.

The Institute’s CEO, Robert Richardson FIH MI, said: “Margaret was a much valued and greatly respected member of our hospitality family. Her commitment to the Institute in Scotland was unwavering, and she gave her time, energy and expertise with remarkable generosity.

“Margaret embodied the very best of our profession through her kindness, professionalism and dedication to supporting those around her. She will be remembered fondly, and our thoughts are with her family, friends and all those who had the privilege of knowing her.”

Margaret built lasting professional relationships and friendships throughout her career. Her work with the Institute reflected her belief in hospitality as a profession built on service, encouragement and shared purpose

She will be remembered with gratitude and affection by colleagues, friends and everyone who worked with her over many years of service to the Institute and the wider hospitality sector. Her contribution to the Institute of Hospitality in Scotland will be remembered with great respect and appreciation both now and in the years to come.
