IoH confirms accreditation for Edinburgh Napier University

The Institute of Hospitality has awarded accreditation for five years to Edinburgh Napier University for their undergraduate and postgraduate degree programmes in international hospitality, festival and event, and tourism management.

At undergraduate level, the BA (Hons) International Hospitality Management, BA (Hons) International Festival and Event Management, BA (Hons) International Tourism Management, and BA (Hons) International Tourism and Airline Management are delivered over four years full-time and cover general management topics such as marketing, accounting and human resources management. Modules aligned to hospitality, tourism and events management feature in each programme, and highly specialised modules form a critical part of each degree. A work-based learning or a live project is undertaken by students in the third year enabling them to develop their academic knowledge along with practical skills, and a dissertation is undertaken in the fourth and final year.

At postgraduate level, the MSc International Festival and Event Management, MSc International Heritage and Cultural Tourism Management, and MSc International Tourism Destination Management are delivered in one year full-time, and the MSc Global Hospitality Management is delivered over two years full-time. These programmes focus strongly on critical and original thinking and cover contemporary issues, current research methods and new trends.

The programmes delivered by The Business School have a good balance of theory, concepts and practice, which enable students to develop successful careers in the relevant industry and to prepare them for careers in related sectors.

The Professional Review Panel commended the programmes and, in particular:

• The varied and diverse nature of the programmes which offer a range of opportunities to students
• The deliberate ‘narrowing’ from general to specific module content is innovative and ‘clever’ and is advantageous to students and the institution
• The active involvement in the industry in the programmes is a good example of best practice
• The range of academic and industry expertise within the academic teaching team
• The range of student support that is available
• The rigour involved in the quality management and assurance process and the policies and procedures
• The steps taken to change teaching methods during the pandemic years.
