The conference theme was ‘The Hospitality Industry: Its Impact on the Environment, Community, and Workplace’ and the winning paper was entitled: United we stand, divided we fall-inviting masculinities into hospitality gender studies and was written by Associate Professor Shelagh K Mooney, School of Hospitality & Tourism, Auckland University of Technology, New Zealand. The award was proudly sponsored by the IoH.
The research paper argues that while researchers acknowledge that not all women share universal characteristics and workplace outcomes, they can fail to recognise multiple masculinities in the same way. Organisational hierarchies privilege certain groups of men, while disadvantaging other groups of men, and women. More intersectional studies are needed to look at how gender combines with race, ethnicity and age, in order to create meaningful change and ensure equitable futures for all hospitality employees.
