As IoH CEO Robert Richardson MI FIH explains: “The care industry is a sector in distress. It is worth a huge £50.3 billion a year, employs 1.8 million people, and has around 165,000 vacancies and a staff turnover of 29%. From our discussions, it is clear the hospitality industry needs to pull together to deal with this. The commonality between care and hospitality is huge – both in terms of the difficulties they are facing and their need to address them.”
As Nicky Hazell, Home Admissions Advisor at Cinnamon Care Collection told us: “Our problems are not individual, specific to our homes, they are across the board. The round table has highlighted that we are all doing something different and perhaps we need to share information and knowledge more widely.”
With an ageing UK population of 11 million people over 65 and in 10 years’ time that will be more than 13 million people, the issues are not going away, concluded the panel.
