Yvonne, as a Hospitality Career Mentor and Advisor, Certified Academic Counselor, Writer, Brand Consultant and Top 30 Hospitality Influencer in Nigeria, what does International Women’s Day mean to you?
International Women’s Day is a remarkable celebration for me. It’s a day to remind the world of the enormous capabilities that women embody. A day to acknowledge the achievements of women in various fields and sectors, no matter how small or great they may be.
As a successful female businesswoman in hospitality, have you met with any bias or discrimination because of your gender, during your career?
Yes I have and the most challenging area is ‘BUSINESS CAPITAL’ (FUNDING)! Despite the global growth of women-led businesses, funding continues to be a significant challenge for women like me in business. Still today, it’s sad to say those female entrepreneurs receive less support than their male counterparts.
Do you feel that the industry has changed for the better as far as women’s equality is concerned?
I do! I am glad to say that from what I’ve seen, women are gaining representation and much more visibility in leadership and other decision making roles. Which is an improvement from what had been.
What advice would you give to young women starting out in our industry?
It’s a long-haul, a long journey, not a marathon so be open to explore different experiences and never stop learning. As you learn, you keep growing.
Why say ‘I’m in’- #imin to the Institute of Hospitality?
I have always had a passion for learning and development. The Institute provides the right platform for my personal growth and my overall journey in the hospitality Industry.
During your time in hospitality, what’s the most wonderful, worst and downright weird experiences you’ve had?
Wonderful: The mistakes I have had to make, the growth process I have taken and am still taking, has been wonderful. Testing so many waters (sectors), and finding out what works best for me has been very memorable.
Worst: I wouldn’t say I have had any worst moment. Any mistakes, which I call experiences, that I’ve made when choosing the right career path in hospitality, eventually made me a better person. The person I am today.
Weirdest: I’m happy to say, there are none that I can recall!
