The 12th edition of the European Mise en Place Cup competition was held in Maastricht last month.
Bringing together nearly 200 students representing 36 hotel schools and universities from 16 different countries. They were judged by 80 senior Industry figures representing 38 different hospitality businesses.
Over two days the teams battled with presentations to jury rooms, a debating competition, a social media campaign and movie to present the most compelling answer to this year’s theme ‘Battle of the brands – will hotel chains survive in the battle for guest loyalty’.
The EMCup is the brainchild of Charles van Goch, CEO of Mise en Place and Flores Drabbe of HRC International and is driven by an International Advisory Board which Peter Ducker FIH, our Chief Executive is a member of.
The first day was hosted at Maastricht Hotel School, a leading, modern university faculty with a training hotel set in a historic building on the campus. The second day was held at the Maastricht Convention Centre.
The judges agreed that if the focus, commitment and presentation skills of the teams represents the generation coming into our Industry then the future looks bright – sharp, quick witted and competent.
There were four teams from the UK, representing Manchester Metropolitan University, Sheffield Hallam, Oxford Brookes and The University of East London. The overall winner was the team from Breda University of Applied Science, Manchester Metropolitan were in second place and University of Northern Denmark were third.
Peter’s reflection on the event was that in those two days the students enjoyed an experience that will stay with them for years, giving them confidence, happy memories and a great addition to their CV’s. Charles Van Goch said “The EMCup has evolved and grown its own unique personality. There are now over 1,000 young professionals who have taken part, it’s an elite alumni, and I love to think that competitors from different years will meet during their careers and discover that the EMCup is a common bond”.
