IoH confirms endorsement for Imperial London Hotels

30 July 2026

The Institute of Hospitality has confirmed endorsement for the Step Up and Step Up Plus career development programmes delivered by Imperial London Hotels.

Imperial London Hotels comprises seven hotels in Bloomsbury, central London: Royal National Hotel, City Sleeper, Bedford Hotel, President Hotel, Tavistock Hotel, Morton Hotel and the Holiday Inn Bloomsbury. Owned by the Walduck family, the group has been in operation since 1837 and employs approximately 800 staff.

The Step Up and Step Up Plus programmes form part of the Grow your Career structured development pathway created for staff at Imperial London Hotels by the Learning and Development team. The programmes have been designed for full-time employees who have completed six months’ service and who are on a career development pathway to either a supervisory or assistant manager position.

The Step Up programme aims is to give supervisory team members an introduction to management core skills and capabilities. Delivered face-to-face in six one-day sessions over six months, modules include Understanding your Role, Emotional Intelligence and Ownership, Communicate to Lead, Performance Management and Giving Feedback, Delivering Training Effectively, and Finance for Beginners – Managing your Time and Delivering above the Line.

The Step Up Plus programme is designed to build on the Step Up programme and aims to give assistant managers the skills required for their first managerial position, namely core leadership competence and confidence. Delivered face-to-face in four one-day sessions over four months, modules include Managing Yourself, Managing Others, Managing Guests, and Managing Business.

The Institute’s Professional Review Panel commended the programmes, and, in particular:

  • The opportunities offered for the development of staff through these programmes, as stepping stones to higher levels of management.
  • The requirement to attend one day per month rather than as an intensive block.
  • The thoroughness of the programmes’ application process to gain entry to the programme.
  • The overall design, organisation and content of the modules and programmes.
  • The range of activities and participant involvement in each module.

Lisa Dearing, Learning and Development Manager at Imperial London Hotels said: “As a family-owned business, we take pride in nurturing talent. We are thrilled that our Step Up and Step Up Plus programmes are endorsed by the Institute of Hospitality, demonstrating our commitment to high standards in hospitality education and professional development. This prestigious endorsement adds credibility to our students’ CPD, which is crucial for career progression and leadership roles. As our team members advance from Team Member to Supervisor and on to Management roles, they can be confident that their training is independently verified and recognised across the hospitality sector”.

The Institute’s CEO Robert Richardson FIH MI added: “We are thrilled to confirm endorsement for Imperial London Hotels for these valuable career development programmes and congratulate them on the opportunities they provide to enable team members to learn, progress, and excel in their ILH hospitality careers.”
