How many years have you worked in the hospitality industry?
I have worked in the industry for 17 years, and love it every day more!

Where are you currently working and what is your role?
I am currently working at Bovey Castle, Dartmoor National Park, Devon, and as the GM I am the Guardian of this amazing property, ensuring that we create memorable moments for all of our guests.

What attracted you to a career in hospitality?
I was finishing College with the idea of going into University to study Medicine and be a doctor, that was my dream since I was a child and never thought I would do anything different. While studying I started working in the hospitality industry just to earn some pocket money, but the passion of my managers inspired me so much that that I ended up leaving University and the idea of studying Medicine behind, and decided that Hotel management was what I wanted.

What’s been your biggest achievement since working in the industry?
It has to be, at 31 years old to become General Manager of this iconic property that is Bovey Castle.

What’s been your most memorable day in your working life?
I have had many memorable days, but the one that stands out was the day Bovey Castle got announced as a 5 Star Hotel and 3 rosettes, only 12 months after I joined.

What’s been the biggest change to the industry you’ve seen over the last 5 years?
The biggest changes I have seen over the last 5 years in this amazing industry is that more and more only the companies that invest in their teams are succeeding. Whilst in the past there was a huge pool of trained professionals, now there is a shortage, therefore only the ones “breeding” their own professionals are succeeding. I truly believe this will be the case over the next few years also.

What advice would you give to someone considering a career in hospitality?
Dedicate yourself, listen carefully and have desire to succeed! Plan your career and what you want to achieve from the early days, so that every decision you take you have in mind your ultimate goal. More importantly, pick the people you will want to work for/with, do not just make your decision based on the Property!

Who has inspired you the most during your career so far?
There were several inspirations in my career throughout the years; fortunately I was/am lucky to work with some amazing mentors throughout all the years in Hospitality.

What do you think it takes to succeed in hospitality?
It takes a considerable amount of commitment and dedication, but without a doubt a desire to succeed.

Why did you join Institute of Hospitality and which elements of the membership do you use the most?
I joined the Institute of Hospitality so I would have the opportunity to meet with my peers in the industry and network, as well as being able to share my knowledge and learn from them. This is also what I take the most from the membership.
