Hotel and Catering Challenge Cup 2016

For the second year running, the Institute of Hospitality is delighted to sponsor the hugely popular Hotel and Catering Challenge Cup 2016 on 11th September 2016. We are looking forward to bringing together up to 80 football teams, each made up of hospitality professionals, along with friends and families for a day full of fun both on and off the pitch!

One day football tournament with 6 trophies up for grabs to ensure that every team has the opportunity to win some silverware! Kicking off at 11am with nearly 1,200 players all working in the industry and fighting it through the group stages and into the finals, crowning one ultimate champion by the end of the day!

This year’s Cup theme is about how picking the right team – from the workplace to the playing field – leads to success.  The Institute’s own team is as passionate about the ‘beautiful game’ as they are about helping hospitality professionals to build winning careers. So start gathering your team today and plan to join our team on the 11th September for an incredible day and a winning event.

Join us for our traditional start to the year as our expert panel predicts the biggest trends that 2015 holds in store for the industry.

This year we see David Edwards FTS, Head of Research and Forecasting for VisitBritain return to forecast the visitor trends. Nicola Shaw, CEO of HS1 will cover infrastructure, Carl Castledine, Managing Director of Away Resorts will explore trends in the domestic holiday parks market and Matt Costin, Director of Hotels Team at BDRC will look at the opportunities and challenges that the hospitality sector faces over the next 12 months.

There will as usual be plenty of opportunity for discussion during the Q+A and networking afterwards.

Council for Hospitality Management and Education 2015

Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU) warmly invites members of the Institute of Hospitality to attend the Council for Hospitality Management Education (CHME) Research Conference hosted in Manchester in May 2015.

The Council for Hospitality Management Education is a non-profit making organisation representing UK, European and International universities and colleges offering higher education programmes in the fields of hospitality studies, hospitality management, and related fields. It is CHME’s stated purpose to contribute to the professional development and status of UK, European and International hospitality management education, through the sharing of best practice in scholarship and pedagogy.

The conference aims to bring new and important hospitality education research topics to the fore and to provide an opportunity to debate and discuss issues of relevance related to the current and future teaching and learning of hospitality and hospitality management. During recent years, a range of pressures and demands have been exerted on higher education and the provision of hospitality education particularly. Both the hospitality industry and hospitality management education have faced turbulent times in recent years. This conference intends to explore how and why the provision of hospitality and hospitality management education are changing and how best to support the needs of higher education and the wider hospitality industry. Recent discussions in Hospitality issues 35 and 36, provide a timely reminder of the debate on the future of hospitality management education.

The CHME Research conference hosted by MMU will provide an opportunity to discuss future collaboration between higher education and the hospitality industry as part of CHME – PaTH debate on Wednesday 20th May 2015. We especially welcome industry representatives to attend our conference and the conference organising committee at MMU have provided a number of industry focused seminars running alongside the main conference and hope that you will find our keynote speakers and industry related workshops of great benefit to you and your business.

It's less than two weeks to go until the Society's annual President's Debate and Christmas reception takes place. Chaired by Lord Thurso MP FTS, President of the Tourism Society our panel will discuss, amongst other topics, their ambitions for the next government including new business opportunities and the challenges that the industry still faces. The event will double up as the Society's Christmas reception and will provide a great opportunity for you to meet both new and old members and learn more about the Society and what it can offer you.

In The Experience Economy, Pine and Gilmore called for economic sectors to shift from selling services to selling experiences. While services are intangible, experiences are distinguished as being memorable. Global pioneers in the experience economy have sought opportunities to increase their competitive edge and strategic advantage by viewing services as experiences.

Experience EuroCHRIE 2015 conference will seek to place into an industrial and academic context the hospitality, tourism and events industries and the experience economy. Pedagogic research into the educational experiences of hospitality, tourism and events students is also welcome.

We invite the submission of research and practice conference papers and/or poster presentations from academics, industry practitioners and postgraduate research students on the following research themes:

  1. Consumers’ experiences
  2. Management of experiences
  3. Sustainable experiences
  4. Experience technologies
  5. Educational experiences
