‘Third Wave’ Coffee to be discussed at Industry Summit
The influence of a new ‘Third Wave’ of artisan coffee outlets on the UK’s branded coffee shop sector will be explored at the Allegra UK Coffee Leader Summit in April.
Quality independent outlets are springing up on market stalls, mobile vans or sharing space with retailers. Prufrock in Shoreditch, which serves the best cup of coffee in London according to Time Out magazine, shares space at the front of a menswear shop. The man behind Prufrock is World Barista Champion Gwilym Davies who is also a member of Hotelympia’s inspiration team. Both Starbucks (December 2009) and Costa (January 2010) have responded to the new emphasis on authenticity by adding the antipodean creamy smooth 'Flat White' coffee to their UK menus.
The total UK coffee shop market - including branded chains, independents and non-specialist operators - is estimated at 11,063 outlets. The UK branded coffee, estimated at 4,158 outlets, outperformed the sector as a whole increasing turnover by 4.7% to £1.6b in 2009, according to Allegra Strategies.
The Allegra UK Coffee Leader Summit takes place on 21 & 22 April at Vinopolis, London.
