Sri Lanka mission

British Expertise, in association with the Institute of Hospitality and the Tourism Society, is organising a services and expertise mission to Sri Lanka on 27-29 October 2011.

The end of the civil war in 2009 has seen Sri Lanka enter a new phase of economic growth, progressing rapidly from a ‘developing’ country to a fast‐emerging one. Tourism is key to Sri Lanka’s future, and there is a major Government push to modernise the sector. This includes an ambitious strategy to increase tourist arrivals from 600,000 currently to 2.5 million by 2016. This implies 36,000 new hotel rooms.

Key pointers for the market include:

  • 21 million population with GDP increasing at around 8% annually
  • Need to invest in, and rapidly expand, tourism and hospitality skills & services
  • Investment confidence of the Regional Development Banks
  • Special opportunities in newly accessible areas of North and East Sri Lanka
  • Expansion of cultural, eco, adventure and business tourism
  • An alternative, accessible gateway to South Asian markets ‐ India, Maldives

The mission will be of interest to reps of UK companies, consultancies and special service providers, in particular but not confined to hospitality and tourist guide training, hotel quality standards, green and sustainable hotel and resort design, business tourism.
