Kaizen Philosophy at Master Innholders Conference

Four undergraduates of the University of Surrey highlighted the Kaizen philosophy during a very polished performance at the Master Innholder’s Conference in London last month.

KaizenMark Lowman, James Matthews, Carmen Rademacher and Benjamin Veale won the ‘Hotelschool Facebook Competition’ with their thought-provoking entry about the application of the Kaizen philosophy to hospitality management.

Kaizen is a Japanese philosophy of continuous improvement pioneered by car manufacturer Toyota in 1999.  Since then, plenty of companies have used Kaizen to improve  productivity and reduce costs. The undergraduates’ high quality video presentation cited the following examples:

  • Canon raised sales by 3%
  • Virginia Mason, a Seattle-based Medical Centre, made savings of US$360,000
  • A NatWest Bank branch in Croydon, London, saw its turnover increase from £3.8m to £5.7m

The University of Surrey winners explained how Kaizen increases productivity by involving every employee in suggesting operational improvements. Kaizen has the power to change corporate culture for the best and set new standards all with minimal input costs.

The use of Kaizen in hotel companies remains limited and the undergraduates’ were successful in bringing Kaizen to the attention of a large audience of hoteliers.
