Hospitality Apprenticeship Awards 2010

- Are You Up To The Mark -
The Hospitality Skills Alliance has teamed up with leading Awarding Body EDI to launch of the Hospitality Apprenticeship Awards 2010.
The Awards are being organised in partnership with the British Institute of Innkeeping and the Institute of Hospitality. Supporting the Awards are the British Hospitality Association, the National Skills Academy for Hospitality and Millennium and Copthorne Hotels.
About the Awards
The Awards will recognise practical skills, competence and achievement, with winners from each of the different work areas in hospitality, including professional food preparation and cookery, restaurant service, pub, housekeeping, reception, portering and concierge, and customer service. Restaurant service will include both bar and wine service skills.
Entries are invited from all registered hospitality apprentices in the United Kingdom, together with their employers and apprenticeship providers. There will also be direct entry into the National Apprenticeship Awards, and, depending on age, routes through to the World Skills Competitions.
The Awards will be presented at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London on Tuesday, 29th June as part of the British Hospitality Association Annual Lunch The Awards are part of a wider programme of work announced by government to provide world beating apprenticeships for around one in five of all school leavers in the run-up to the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2012.
There will be three categories of Award to recognise excellence on the part of Apprentices, Employers and Apprenticeship Providers.
The National Skills Academy for Hospitality is offering a fantastic Disney Bursary to the winner. They will experience 3.5 days training at the Disney Institute in Florida as well as receiving free flights, accommodation and park access. This bursary will take place in the autumn of 2010 and the National Skills Academy for Hospitality is very excited to be able to give the winner this experience that will help them develop even further in the hospitality industry.

The Shine Awards
The winners of the Shine Awards were announced last evening at the Jumeirah Carlton Hotel, Central London highlighting the achievements of outstanding women working in the hospitality, leisure, travel and tourism sector.

The event, first held in 2004, was attended by some of the most senior representatives of the British travel and tourism industry. The key note address was delivered by the past Shine Awards' Winner, Sandie Dawe, now the CEO of VisitBritain. Also in attendance was Rt Hon Margaret Hodge MBE MP, Minister for Culture and Tourism. Hotel Excellence Awards
The Awards are offered by HRS and supported by the Institute of Hospitality, to promote hotel success and encourage sharing knowledge throughout the industry.

Institute of Hospitality / EuroCHRIE Education Research Award
EuroCHRIE is the European Council on Hotel, Restaurant and Institutional Education. This award commends an individual piece of research that has made a significant contribution to the Hospitality Industry and to Education. This could be a paper submitted to the Annual EuroCHRIE Conference or a piece of research undertaken by a EuroCHRIE member.
The Award
- A prize of 500 Euros
- A certificate for the winner
- Complimentary membership of the Institute of Hospitality for 1 year
- An invitation to an Institute of Hospitality annual event
- Publicity within Institute of Hospitality publications, with an opportunity for a summary of the winning research paper to be published on the Institute's website
The next EuroCHRIE Conference will be held from 22-24 October 2009 at HAAGA-HELIA University of Applied Sciences Haaga Campus in Helsinki, Finland.

Acorn Awards
The Acorn Awards continue the tradition of recognising the outstanding achievements of industry professionals under the age of 30 who go above and beyond the call of duty in their every day roles.These prestigious awards are credited with finding the future leaders of the hospitality industry and have in the past identified key players including Marco Pierre White, Gary Rhodes and Michael Caines.

Acorn Scholarships
The Scholarship's objective is to seek out young, talented individuals within the catering and hospitality industry and help them realise their ambitions and reward their determination. Each year one person is selected by a panel of judges and is rewarded with industry training, international educational trips and a development bursary. Henry Edwards Memorial Prize
The Henry Edwards Memorial Prize is an award given to be used for travel to study specific, named, aspects of the Hospitality or Tourism Industries. Initial entry is by completion of an essay. An annual prize of up to £5,000 will be given to the winning entrant for a project which will require the approval of the judges prior to its commencement. A written report will be expected to be submitted to the judges on completion of the project.
Entries for the award may be submitted by any person aged 25 or under who is either working in the UK Hotel Industry or studying for an industry-approved qualification at a recognised UK college or university.

Olive Barnett Award
Created by The Savoy Gastronomes in 1975, the Olive Barnett Award is given annually to the most outstanding person under 30 in any sector of hospitality, leisure, travel and tourism, anywhere in the world and, most importantly, working in a customer facing role. The Roux Scholarship
